"Life is too short to take things so seriously, including ourselves," says Elizabeth Faith. "Sometimes, the little details are the ones that invite surprise and personality into the mix." For example, what could be more fun than add- ing an unexpected, whimsical conversation starter to your party as you mix up a batch of cocktails for your guests … in a penguin? Modeled after mid-century Italian barware and sourced from Europe, the silver-plated brass penguin shaker is the perfect example of how to add a delight- ful, tongue-in-cheek element of humor to your décor. Another favorite of Faith's is the elegant serving set. At 234 CSD D E S I G N T R E N D S Earthy Elegance Occasionally, a bold, daring piece is all that is required to shake up a look, and the Quarry Rock console is perfect when the goal is to add fair to the modern or traditional dining room. "Our designs and color palettes are inspired by nature," says Gracelyn O'Harra Elmendorf of O'Harra Mellette Interiors. "This unique table relies on texture, rather than color, to create a stunning, unique silhouette and bring an earthy elegance to the room." Designed by Formations, a Southern California company known for its collections of his- torically inspired designs with exquisite detail and unique home in the most casual or sophisticated formal setting, the silver-plated spoons are shaped like delicate leaves. They rest on a board with twig handles and blooming fowers, all reminiscent of a spring garden. Two addi- tional large serving spoons, not shown, come with the set. Best known as Charleston's signature design emporium, fnishes, the Quarry Rock console is handcrafted and fts seamlessly into a transitional or contemporary setting. Replac- ing a traditional buffet, it can be used as a serving table by itself or in conjunction with more traditional dining room pieces. "The uses are limit- ed only by the imagination," Elmendorf says. "Imagine two fanking a doorway, or place one on your loggia for a special event or to celebrate daily life. It would be stunning." The table base and quarry top are sold separately, allowing for creative license if you wish to mix up the look and top it with a beautiful piece of glass or a thick slab of reclaimed wood. O'Harra Mellette Interiors is the home décor source for those seeking to invest in timeless quality and style. "Liz Mellette Andrews and I work closely to create a sophisticat- ed look by pairing clean lines with one-of-a-kind antiques, found items, fabulous fabrics, trims and art. The quarry table works beautifully with this concept," Elmendorf says. einteriors.us, 843-669-7777 Elizabeth Stuart Design is an elegantly eclectic boutique with freshly lush furniture, jewelry and home décor treasures. "You don't shop here, you explore," Faith says. "We are about discovering how style and soul connect; how texture, color and form speak to who we are and how we choose to live." esdcharleston.com, 843-388-3892 Conversation Pieces serving spoons and board Elizabeth Stuart Design | price on request penguin shaker Elizabeth Stuart Design | $225 Quarry Rock console | O'Harra Mellette Interiors | base $3,990, top $1,170
